ENERGY DEMAND MAP

Sabah Renewable Energy Rural Electrification Roadmap aims to pave a pathway to renewable energy for at least half of Sabah’s non-electrified villages by 2027.  One of the challenges to this, however, is that there is currently no comprehensive data on rural settlements or rural electrification status upon which to base state planning.

In order to overcome this, we built the Energy Demand Map, a high-resolution digital map and database that identifies, maps, and characterises villages in Sabah in relation to their infrastructure, economic activity, topography, and various other aspects.  The demand map will be maintained as a living online source, continually updated to track the status of Sabah’s non-electrified communities through the use of satellite mapping and ground truthing.

In doing this, we hope that the demand map may be used to aid in Sabah’s transition towards renewable energy as well as create a surge in awareness of its potential in remote communities.
